"In the five years since that 10 per cent property taxahit, increases have been more reasonable, but they have been creeping back up. City councillors passed budgets that impacted the city portion of property taxes 2.29 per cent (2002), 3.8 per cent (2003), 5.8 per cent (2004) and 5.71 per cent (2005). Including the zero per cent increase in 2000, that averages out to 4.6 per cent per year over the past seven years. That means the city portion of your property taxes has gone up 32.5 per cent in the last seven years. The same issue plagues Brampton every budget -- growth doesn't pay for itself."

"We're living in a fool's paradise here. We can't keep raising the taxes on our business sector," he said.
Council then voted in favour of equalizing the tax hike across all tax categories, with Young casting the lone "no" vote.
About 1.8 per cent of the 2006 tax hike will be used to cover rising police costs, while a fifth of one per cent will cover the city share of this year's library budget increase. The remainder will be set aside in the city's capital reserves.
The increase means the owner of an average home worth $400,000 will pay an additional $52 in property taxes this year.
