Property Taxes
The role of the Real Property Tax Division is to assess all real property in a uniform and equitable basis for purposes of real property taxation. All real property is assessed based on fair market value.

The tax year for real property tax billing purposes runs July 1 to June 30. Tax bills are mailed on July 20. The 1st half taxes are due on or before August 20 and the 2nd half taxes are due on or before February 20. If you desire, you can elect to pay the entire bill for 1st half/2nd half taxes on or before August 20.

Personal income tax
• Hawaii imposes a 8.25 percent maximum variable personal income tax rate.

Sales tax

• Hawaii does not have a sales tax. However, the state collects a 4 percent general excise tax assessed on all business activities including retail sales, commissions, rental income and services.

• The top five states where the tax burden as a percent of income is the highest are: Maine (13.0%), New York (12.0%), Hawaii (11.5%), Rhode Island (11.5%), and Wisconsin (11.4%).  The United States average is 10.1%.  The District of Columbia is 12.2%.
• The five states with the lowest tax burden as a percent of income are: Alaska (6.4%) 50th, New Hampshire (7.4%) 49th, Delaware (8.0%) 48th, Tennessee (8.3%) 47th, and Alabama (8.7%) 46th. See effective state tax burden table
