Except for assessments for special benefits, the following values of the homestead of a permanent resident of this State who has owned a homestead in this State for the preceding 12 months are exempt from taxation:
A. The estate up to the just value of $7,000 for homesteads with a just value of less than $125,000;
B. The estate up to the just value of $5,000 for homesteads with a just value of at least $125,000 but less than $250,000; and
C. The estate up to the just value of $2,500 for homesteads with a just value of $250,000 or greater.

Each year, Maine Revenue Services determines the full equalized value of each municipality and subsequently calculates its full value tax rate.

• Maine levies are 2 to 8.5 percent in 4 brackets.

Sales tax
• Maine's general sales tax rate is 5 percent (food and prescription drugs exempt).


• The top five states where the tax burden as a percent of income is the highest are: Maine (13.0%), New York (12.0%), Hawaii (11.5%), Rhode Island (11.5%), and Wisconsin (11.4%).  The United States average is 10.1%.  The District of Columbia is 12.2%.
• The five states with the lowest tax burden as a percent of income are: Alaska (6.4%) 50th, New Hampshire (7.4%) 49th, Delaware (8.0%) 48th, Tennessee (8.3%) 47th, and Alabama (8.7%) 46th. See effective state tax burden table
