You can now access estimates on property taxes by local unit and school district, using 2003 millage rates. Simply enter the Taxable Value (approximately 50% of your home value), and select your county from the drop down list provided. You will then be prompted to select your city, village or township along with your school district.

The Homeowner's Principal Residence Exemption Program, formerly known as the Michigan Homestead Exemption Program, allows homeowners an exemption from their local School Operating Millage. In accordance with Public Act 237 of 1994, homeowners that occupy their property as their principal residence may exempt up to 18 mills.

Michigan Home Property Valuation Exemptions

Normally, when you purchase a home, the property owner files a Homeowner's Principal Residence Exemption Affidavit, Form 2368, with the township or city assessor. The exemption information is then posted to the local property tax roll.

In many cases, your local unit of government performs administrative audits of Homeowner's Principal Residence Exemption records. However, the Department of Treasury performs administrative reviews of records for some counties. The complete process is outlined here.

Personal income tax
• Michigan's Department of Treasury imposes a 3.95 percent flat rate for personal income tax.

Sales tax
• Michigan's state sales tax is 6 percent.


• The top five states where the tax burden as a percent of income is the highest are: Maine (13.0%), New York (12.0%), Hawaii (11.5%), Rhode Island (11.5%), and Wisconsin (11.4%).  The United States average is 10.1%.  The District of Columbia is 12.2%.

• The five states with the lowest tax burden as a percent of income are: Alaska (6.4%) 50th, New Hampshire (7.4%) 49th, Delaware (8.0%) 48th, Tennessee (8.3%) 47th, and Alabama (8.7%) 46th. See effective state tax burden table
