Missouri Home Property Valuation
Missouri residential property is assessed at 19% of its fair market value. Personal property is assessed at rates ranging from 5% to 33.3%.

A homeowner with a $50,000 house and 2 cars worth a total of $15,000, living in an area where the tax rate levied by the local government is $5.23 per $100 of assessed value, would have taxes calculated:

Home Property Valuation Exemptions
Missouri does not have a homestead exemption program however, The Missouri Property Tax Credit Claim gives credit to certain senior citizens and 100 percent disabled individuals for a portion of the real estate taxes or rent they have paid for the year. The credit is for a maximum of $750 and can only be claimed on the home they occupied during the period being claimed. Homestead Preservation Credit Program
This program offers seniors and certain others a credit on property tax on their homes if their taxes increase more than 5% in a reassessement year or 2.5% in a non-reassessment year. It does not affect the assessed value of your property.

To qualify for the program you must:
Be age 65 or older
Be an individual under age 65 who is 100% disabled
AND have Federal Adjusted Gross Income not exceeding $70,000 AND own the home you occupy.

You are ineligible for the credit If you made construction improvements totalling 5% or more of your home's value during the year. You must apply for this credit between April 1st and September 30th. A portion of the form must be completed at the Assessor's office.

The Missouri Department of Revenue administers this program, which is subject to funding by the Missouri General Assembly. You can find out more about the program from the Missouri Department of Revenue.

State Income Tax
Missouri income tax ranges from 1.5% to a high of 6%

State Sales Tax
Sales tax levies are 4.225% (prescription drugs exempt; food is taxed at 1.225%)


• The top five states where the tax burden as a percent of income is the highest are: Maine (13.0%), New York (12.0%), Hawaii (11.5%), Rhode Island (11.5%), and Wisconsin (11.4%).  The United States average is 10.1%.  The District of Columbia is 12.2%.
