• Montana property owners can have their property taxes reduced if they meet certain qualifications. To receive the credit, Form PPB-8 must be filed with the local Department of Revenue office in the county where the property is located.
Extended Property Tax Assistance
• This is a new program passed by the 2003 Montana Legislature. The program offers a reduction to the tax rate used to determine tax liability on specific residences and up to five acres of appurtenant land for those persons or entities who meet certain criteria.
Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Property Tax Relief
• A benefit of a reduced property tax rate is available by application for Disabled Veterans and the Surviving Spouse of a veteran that was killed while on active duty or died as a result of a service-connected disability.

If the veteran is living, the veteran:
Must have been honorably discharged from active service,
Must currently be rated 100% disabled or is paid at the 100% disabled rate by the United State Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for a service connected disability, and;
Must own and occupy the dwelling or mobile home as a primary residence.
Adjusted gross income is not more than $39,000 if single or $45,000, adjusted annually for inflation, if married.

Elderly Home Owner/Renter Credit (MCA 15-30-171 through 15-30-179)
An income tax credit is available to qualifying taxpayers. The amount of the credit is based on household income adjusted by the amount of property taxes, fees, special assessments and special improvement districts (SIDs) billed on a residence and land not to exceed one acre. The taxpayer or spouse must be age 62 or older as of December 31 in the tax year for which the credit is claimed.

State Sales Tax
Montana levies no general sales or use tax on consumers. Montana’s gasoline tax stands at $0.2775 per gallon. A 3% tax on accommodations and campgrounds is added to the 4% tax on rental vehicles.


• The top five states where the tax burden as a percent of income is the highest are: Maine (13.0%), New York (12.0%), Hawaii (11.5%), Rhode Island (11.5%), and Wisconsin (11.4%).  The United States average is 10.1%.  The District of Columbia is 12.2%.
