Taxes are assessed at the municipal (cities, townships, and boroughs) level.

Each class of property is assessed at a ratio unique to that type of property. The assessment ratio is applied to the market value of the property to determine the assessed value of the property. Each county and municipality then applies its millage rate to the assessed value to determine the tax due. The millage rate is equivalent to the tax per $1,000 of assessed value. For example, if the millage rate is 200 mills and the assessed value of the property is $1,000, the tax on that property is $200. Assessment Ratios

Home Property Valuation Exemptions  

The dwelling house and up to one acre of surrounding land is exempt for:
a veteran who is permanently and totally disabled from a service-connected disability and the surviving spouse
the surviving spouse of military personnel killed in the line of duty
a paraplegic or hemiplegic person and the surviving spouse

State Income Tax
• South Carolina state income tax has 6 brackets ranging from 2.5% to a high of 7%

South Carolina State Sales Tax
• The sales tax is 5% (prescription drugs exempt). 25 counties impose an additional 1% local option sales tax; two counties imposed a 2% sales tax.  Seniors 85 and older pay 4%.
Gasoline Tax: 16.0 cents/gallon


• The top five states where the tax burden as a percent of income is the highest are: Maine (13.0%), New York (12.0%), Hawaii (11.5%), Rhode Island (11.5%), and Wisconsin (11.4%).  The United States average is 10.1%.  The District of Columbia is 12.2%.

• The five states with the lowest tax burden as a percent of income are: Alaska (6.4%) 50th, New Hampshire (7.4%) 49th, Delaware (8.0%) 48th, Tennessee (8.3%) 47th, and Alabama (8.7%) 46th. See effective state tax burden table
